An aspiring doctor, avid writer, recipient of the Scholastic Award, French horn player, All State Festival participant, brilliant mathematician, program director of the reminiscence therapy project at Bridges by EPOCH, Dean's List for two semesters at College of William and Mary, and a leader at several clubs at Vanderbilt University.
All of these are Emily's accolades, but most importantly she had a vision to make the world a better place. She hoped to bring advanced education and opportunities to the students at Dream Diné at the Navajo reservation in New Mexico where she volunteered.
Emily’s love of nature and appreciation of its beauty led to her love of hiking. Nature embraced her but in the end Mother Nature took her from us - leaving her spirit in the trees, flowers, and blinding beauty of the White Mountains, where she was put to rest.
She left us suddenly and too soon. Left us with an emptiness that will be hard to fill as nobody will ever be able to replace her bright spirit. We cherish all the memories that we have with her - all the love and happiness that she brought to our lives.
Emily's Hike is co-sponsored by Hiking Buddies [a NH Nonprofit, 501(c)(3)] and the Emily M. Sotelo Persistence & Safety Charitable Foundation [established by Emily's family]. Both organizations are committed to hiker education and reducing avoidable tragedies in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Emily's heart was to help people. Both organizations have a number of objectives and initiatives that the donations from Emily's Hike will push forward.
As an example, Hiking Buddies is launching "Buddy Certifications" in the Fall 2023 with Redline Guiding, and is covering all costs for young adult training and safety courses for 17-25 year old participants. (Currently running as of October 2023)
Hiking Buddies will tap into its community-oriented roots and build fun, less-intimidating learning environments for similarly-aged young adults, while also removing financial barriers. Hiking Buddies has a number of other initiatives in the works not yet ready for launch, but awaiting financial support, and all aimed at education of less experienced outdoor enthusiasts like Emily Sotelo.
With the support of people like you, we can save a life pre-emptively.
The Emily Sotelo Foundation is seeking partnerships to enhance hiker safety and is looking to build more innovative ways to reach young people. The foundation is the furthering of Emily Sotelo's legacy and love for people, and plans to provide scholarships to children with diabetes to attend hiking camps.
